We have updated the Related Events page. There was also an update in the Officers page since our Treasurer Dr Greg Knowlton has a new email address.

We are also preparing for another one-day Workshop; the 6th Workshop on Pyrotechnic Combustion Mechanisms. This will be held on Saturday July 12th 2008. Please click on www.pyroworkshop.net for more information. (We’ve created a single web-adres for this workshop just to make it easier for people to find all information in one place.)

IN MEMORIAM

The International Pyrotechnics Society (IPS) is saddened to learn of the death of one of its most respected leaders and fellow member. Dr. Fred Volk, retired member of the Fraunhofer Institute of Chemical Technology at Pfinztal/Berghausen, Germany, died on 23 September 2005. Fred started his scientific career in 1960 at the ICT after finishing his academic studies at the Technical University of Karlsruhe (Germany) obtaining diploma and promotion (Dr.rer.nat) degrees. He published over 150 papers in the area of thermal stability of explosives and combustion processes. In 1975 he was nominated as Deputy Director of Fraunhofer ICT.

Fred was a Participating Charter Member of the IPS whose active and dynamic participation in Society matters and the International Pyrotechnics Seminar series covers the more than four decades existence of the Society. He was Vice President of the Society from 1986-1990, served on the International Advisory Committee and/or Steering Committees of numerous International Pyrotechnic Seminars as well as the Chairman of the 10th International Pyrotechnics Seminar. His crisp, consist and probing questions, along with his kindness and sense of humor that came out during discussions at technical symposia such as our Seminars will be missed. A highlight for many of us was getting to visit with Fred this summer in Germany at the 32nd International Pyrotechnics Seminar held jointly with the 36th International Annual ICT Conference. The energetics community has suffered a great loss, indeed!
